In a significant development for Cambodian transportation, a fleet of high-speed locomotives has made its way to Sihanoukville from Japan. Representing the epitome of modern engineering, the 11 KiHa 183 Series DMU high-speed passenger locomotives set out on their journey from Hakodate Port on April 15, 2024. These locomotives were specifically commissioned by Royal Railway Cambodia and reached their final destination at Sihanoukville Port on April 27, 2024.
With a remarkable capacity to soar at speeds up to 110 kilometers per hour, the KiHa 183 Series DMU locomotives are poised to revolutionize transportation in Cambodia. Their intended purpose lies in operating on the Phnom Penh-Poipet Northern Railway, which is soon to become the nation’s inaugural high-speed railway line.
The Phnom Penh-Poipet Northern Railway spans an impressive 382 kilometers, signifying a monumental investment of over 4 billion US dollars. Implementation of this ambitious project involves not only the development of the railway tracks but also the procurement of essential operational components such as locomotive heads and carriages. Anticipated to take four years to complete, the railway’s construction aims to enhance connectivity and facilitate efficient movement of people and goods throughout Cambodia.
