In a significant move to bolster regional cooperation and resilience, Cambodian Foreign Minister Sok Chenda Sophea is set to participate in the 57th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, scheduled to take place in Vientiane from the 24th to the 27th of July, 2024. This attendance comes at the invitation of Laotian Foreign Minister Saleumxay Kommasith and underscores Cambodia’s commitment to ASEAN’s mission and objectives. The theme for this year’s meetings, “ASEAN: Enhancing Connectivity and Resilience,” aims to explore innovative strategies to amplify ASEAN’s cooperative efforts towards achieving a more interconnected and robust region.
According to an official press release from Monday (Jul. 22), this gathering will provide a platform for discussions on the continuous work of ASEAN Community-building. It aims to delve into groundbreaking methods to enhance regional cooperation, with the ultimate goal of achieving shared prosperity through increased connectivity and resilience.
In addition to his participation in the ASEAN meetings, Foreign Minister Sok Chenda Sophea is slated to engage in Mekong cooperation framework discussions alongside the foreign ministers of Japan, the Republic of Korea, and the United States Secretary of State. These talks will focus on fostering cooperation and partnerships under bilateral and multilateral agreements, further emphasizing Cambodia’s proactive stance in regional diplomacy.
Furthermore, during his visit to Vientiane, Sok Chenda Sophea, along with other ASEAN foreign ministers and the Secretary-General of ASEAN, is scheduled to conduct a courtesy call on the Laotian Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone. This gesture highlights the camaraderie and mutual respect amongst ASEAN member states, reinforcing the importance of diplomatic relations and cooperation.
Moreover, the Foreign Minister is expected to engage in bilateral discussions with his counterparts from other nations.
