Cambodian Krama Recognized as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage

The Cambodian krama, a traditional scarf symbolizing the nation’s cultural identity, has been officially recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. This historic recognition was announced during the 19th session of the Intergovernmental Committee under the 2003 UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, held in Asunción, Paraguay.

Phoeurng Sackona, Cambodia’s Minister of Culture and Fine Arts, led a delegation to attend the session from December 2 to 7, 2024. The event was inaugurated by Santiago Peña Palacios, President of Paraguay, Adriana Ortiz Semidei, Minister of Culture, and Audrey Azoulay, UNESCO Director-General.
