Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Cambodia has shown remarkable progress in reducing poverty rates. According to the latest update of the global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI), Cambodia is an encouraging case, with a significant decline in poverty incidence and the number of poor people within just 7.5 years, including pandemic years from 2014 to 2021/22.
The MPI report reveals that Cambodia’s incidence of poverty fell from 36.7% to 16.6%, and the number of poor people halved from 5.6 million to 2.8 million. This achievement was due to a combination of innovative policies and targeted interventions that aimed to address the root causes of poverty.
These policies and interventions include the promotion of inclusive growth, agricultural development, and social protection programs. Additionally, the government implemented a successful cash transfer program for vulnerable households affected by the pandemic.
Cambodia’s success in poverty reduction is a beacon of hope for global poverty reduction efforts. It demonstrates that with a committed government, innovative policies, and targeted interventions, poverty rates can be sharply reduced in a relatively short period, even in the context of a pandemic. Moreover, it underscores the importance of comprehensive data collection in tracking and intercepting the interconnected deprivations experienced by poor people in real-time.
Not only is poverty reduction essential from a human perspective, but it is also vital for economic growth and development. By lifting people out of poverty, Cambodia is fostering a more prosperous and stable society. Poverty reduction also provides opportunities for further economic growth and expanded access to education and healthcare.
As the world continues to grapple with the long-term effects of the pandemic, Cambodia’s success in poverty reduction serves as a reminder that progress can be made. With continued commitment and strengthened data collection, we can strive towards a world where poverty is significantly reduced, and the well-being of all individuals is assured. Cambodia’s success story is a testament to the immense potential of determined poverty reduction efforts, and it offers hope for a brighter, more equitable future.
