Cambodia Launches Direct Sea Shipments of Rice to the Philippines

PHNOM PENH — Cambodia’s agricultural export sector has reached a major milestone with the official launch of direct sea shipments of rice to the Philippines. The new maritime trade route drastically reduces transit times from approximately 21 days down to just five to seven days, enhancing the competitive edge of Cambodian rice in the region.

Enhancing Efficiency and Trade Competitiveness

The newly established direct bulk-carrier and vessel routes—operating via key gateways such as Kampot Port and the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port—allow exporters to ship thousands of tonnes of rice directly without complex handling or extended delays.

  • Significantly Faster Transit: Shipping times have plummeted to a swift 5 to 7 days, replacing older, indirect logistics channels that previously took up to three weeks.
  • Cost-Effective Bulk Transport: Utilizing direct vessel and break-bulk shipments minimizes container rental overheads and handling expenses, making Cambodian grain increasingly attractive to international buyers.
  • Expanding Regional Footprint: The initiative aligns with broader bilateral agreements and memorandums of understanding (MoUs) on agricultural cooperation signed between Cambodia and the Philippines.

Strong Growth in International Markets

According to data from the Cambodia Rice Federation (CRF), the Kingdom’s total international rice exports experienced significant upward momentum, reflecting soaring global demand for premium Cambodian varieties. Industry leaders note that the new direct shipping infrastructure will be instrumental in supporting long-term supply targets and expanding trade relationships across Southeast Asia.
