Cambodia’s first high-speed rail line completed its preliminary study.

Construction of the Phnom Penh-Poipet express rail project, a key element of Cambodia’s economic development, has made headway in recent days.

According to the preliminary findings of a feasibility study to upgrade the Phnom Penh-Poipet railway into Cambodia’s first express railway, the project would cost more than $4 billion and take four years to complete.

China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) conducted the research. According to H.E Sun Chanthol, Minister of Public Works and Transport, once completed, it would focus on passenger travel and international cargo transportation between Cambodia and Thailand.

Recently, Chanthol virtually met with CRBC to discuss the preliminary results. During the meeting, CRBC provided a general overview of the project, which would cover 382 kilometers. The $4 billion price covers both the trains and the electricity-powered infrastructure.

This high-speed railway has a width of 1435 mm, a speed of 160 km/hr, and 33 stations. In the first stage, 19 stations will be built, followed by 14 more in the second stage.

More than 300 overpasses would need to be built in order to prevent collisions between trains and vehicles on intersecting roadways. The train’s body would be divided into sections, one for passengers and another for cargo.

Phnom Penh-Poipet express rail will strengthen Cambodia’s economy. Once completed, the railway will connect the provinces of Kandal, Kampong Chhnang, Pursat, Battambang, and Banteay Meanchey. The project is aimed at improving trade, investment, and connectivity between Thailand and Cambodia.
