Cambodia’s Prime Minister Introduces Subsidy Program for Pregnant Women

In a recent announcement, Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Sen has instructed the Ministry of Social Affairs to implement a new subsidy program for pregnant women that will provide cash support based on the number of children. The decision was made during a meeting with around 18,000 workers in Kong Pisey District, Kampong Speu Province on June 17th.

Under the new program, expectant mothers will receive the same amount of financial support from pregnancy to childbirth, regardless of whether they are expecting one child or twins. However, once the child is born, the cash support will be provided based on the actual number of children until they reach the age of 2 years old.

Prime Minister Hun Sen acknowledged that the previous system’s financial support for twins was the same as for those who had one child, which he deemed unfair. As a result, he instructed Vong Soth, Minister of Social Affairs, Veterans and Youth Rehabilitation, to change the practice to better reflect the needs of families with multiple children.

According to the announcement, the Prime Minister stated, “It should be noted that on June 17, 2023, the Prime Minister decided to implement cash subsidies for pregnant women up to 2 years old for twins, with a cash subsidy regime based on the number of children.”

This new subsidy program aims to provide better financial support for families during pregnancy and early childhood, ensuring that the needs of families with more than one child are adequately addressed. By offering cash support based on the number of children, the government hopes to alleviate some of the financial burdens faced by Cambodian families during this crucial period in their lives.

Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Sen has made a significant change to the country’s subsidy program for pregnant women, providing financial support based on the number of children. This move is expected to benefit families with multiple children and improve their overall well-being during pregnancy and early childhood.
