On June 16, 2025, H.E. Huot Hak, Minister of Tourism of Cambodia, held a productive working dinner with H.E. Shaharuddin Bin Onn, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Malaysia to Cambodia. The discussion centered on expanding tourism cooperation between Cambodia and Malaysia, with a focus on increasing bilateral tourism flows and promoting mutual investment opportunities.

New Tourism Initiatives and Strategic Collaboration

During the meeting, both leaders emphasized the importance of diversifying tourism events in Cambodia, particularly during the country’s scenic Green Season. The Green Season, known for its lush landscapes and cooler weather, is being marketed to Malaysian tourists to attract more visitors during this period. The two sides agreed to launch new and innovative tourism exhibitions in both countries to showcase the unique attractions of each destination.

Promoting Cambodia’s Tourism Potential

One key proposal discussed was the production of a promotional video highlighting Cambodia’s diverse tourism offerings and its potential for investment in the sector. This video is aimed at reaching Malaysian tourists as well as business communities, showcasing Cambodia’s growing tourism industry and its increasing opportunities for development and investment.

Boosting Connectivity: Direct Flight Between Phnom Penh and Penang

A notable achievement in enhancing bilateral tourism cooperation is the recent launch of a direct flight between Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s capital, and Penang, Malaysia’s second-largest and busiest airport. This new flight is expected to significantly improve air connectivity between the two countries, facilitating easier travel for tourists and boosting trade and tourism-related exchanges.

Strong Diplomatic Relations Supporting Tourism Growth

Ambassador Shaharuddin expressed his appreciation for the ongoing fruitful cooperation between Cambodia and Malaysia, attributing much of the success to the visionary leadership of former Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen and his successor, Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet. He noted that their leadership has paved the way for extensive development across various sectors, including tourism, and has strengthened people-to-people exchanges.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Cambodia-Malaysia Tourism

The meeting between H.E. Huot Hak and H.E. Shaharuddin Bin Onn marks an important step toward further strengthening Cambodia-Malaysia relations. With a shared commitment to enhancing bilateral tourism, both countries look forward to future collaboration and the continued development of the tourism sector.

This dialogue highlights the increasing role of strategic partnerships in enhancing tourism experiences and connectivity, further positioning Cambodia as a key destination for Malaysian travelers and investors.
