Preah Srey Içanavarman Museum (Sosoro)

Cambodia museum of economy and money

SOSORO was developed to offer a unique perspective on Cambodian history as well as a better understanding of the constant interaction between money, the economy, and politics.

The Cambodian Museum of Economy and Money is named after King Isanavarman I, the ruler of Chenla, where the region’s first monetary instruments are thought to have developed in the 7th century. Sarakmunti Sethakech Rupreyvatho Preah Sri Isanavarman is the King’s full honorary name, hence the Khmer acronym SOSORO, and the institution is known as the SOSORO Museum.

Museum is developed in a most historic building, the former Town Hall of Phnom Penh, which is located near the Cambodia Securities Exchange and various buildings relating to the National Bank of Cambodia in Phnom Penh.

2,000 years of Cambodia’s financial history from Funan to the present

There are twelve different modules in the museum. They focus on the significant relationship between money, credit, growth, inflation, and other factors, as well as some key facts and lessons learnt from the country’s economic and monetary history.

Through a huge number of display cases and panels enhanced by multimedia presentations, visitors can learn about 2,000 years of Cambodian monetary history at their own leisure.

The contemporary design of the SOSORO museum is loaded with videos, games, and interactive touch screens that are sure to entertain and educate the public.

Visitors are encouraged to put what they’ve learned into context, so they can grasp the rules and mechanisms, as well as the critical role of money in the country’s independence and sovereignty.
