by TBC

President of the Senate Samdech Hun Sen of Cambodia highlighted the importance of passing the governmental reins to the younger generation during a meeting with British Ambassador Dominic Williams. The dialogue took place at the Senate on Thursday morning, May 30. President of the Senate Samdech Hun Sen affirmed that the new generation’s leadership is crucial for steering the nation towards continued improvement and success.

Discussions during the ambassador’s courtesy visit also covered topics such as the modernization of administrative processes within the Cambodian government. President of the Senate requested the assistance of the United Kingdom in refining human resource management and improving active governance through advanced technological support.

President of the Senate expressed his contentment with this meeting following their initial interaction in February 2023. On his part, Ambassador Williams conveyed gratitude for the warm reception and congratulated Samdech Hun Sen on his role as Senate president. He wished him well for his health and tenure.

Ambassador Williams noted significant strides in Cambodian-British relations since his appointment, citing the establishment of a British University on Koh Pich. This academic institution, inaugurated in September 2023, offers affordable tuition and scholarship opportunities, making higher education more accessible in Cambodia.

Moreover, a recent agreement has been signed between the UK and the Cambodian Ministry of Economy and Finance. This venture aims to advance green infrastructure projects and renewable energy initiatives, alongside enhancing defense cooperation, which included the graduation of the first Cambodian student from a British Defense University. The recent docking of a British naval ship at Sihanoukville port was also a topic of discussion, with hopes expressed for future visits by British naval vessels.

Trade relations have also seen an uptick, with the trade volume growing steadily. An investment forum has been established to draw further British investments to Cambodia, particularly following the UK’s exit from the European Union. President of the Senate Samdech Hun Sen emphasized that UK policies towards Cambodia remained unchanged and encouraged continuous collaboration to amplify economic relations.

Regarding international and regional issues, discussions spanned the Myanmar crisis, the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and tensions in the Middle East and South China Sea. President of the Senate Samdech Hun Sen commented on the comparably reduced tensions in the South China Sea since Cambodia’s chairmanship of ASEAN in 2022. He stressed the importance of all concerned parties adhering to the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea and working collaboratively towards peace.

Additionally, Samdech Hun Sen addressed concerns about various national strategies in the Indo-Pacific region from countries such as Japan, Australia, USA, EU, Canada, India, and South Korea. He emphasized that these strategies should foster peace, development, and respect the centrality of ASEAN, expressing gratitude towards ASEAN partners for their respect and cooperation.

The meeting concluded with Ambassador Williams thanking President of the Senate Samdech Hun Sen once again, reflecting on the increasingly strong and progressive relations between Cambodia and the United Kingdom.
