The Prime Minister of Cambodia and the Ambassador of Japan to Cambodia engaged in discussions aimed at bolstering and broadening collaboration between the two nations across various sectors. This dialogue transpired at the Peace Palace in Phnom Penh yesterday afternoon.
During the meeting, Japanese Ambassador UENO Atsushi reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to supporting Cambodia in areas such as investment, connectivity, technology, education, vocational training, security, and defense. Notably, he expressed satisfaction that the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force recently hosted the inaugural meeting of the Cambodia-Japan army working group in the defense sector.
Furthermore, Ambassador UENO proposed the idea of a joint bilateral naval drill between the Cambodian and Japanese navies to enhance the already strong ties between the two countries. He emphasized the importance of fostering collaboration for the mutual benefit of both nations, contributing to security and prosperity regionally and globally.
In response, Dr. Hun Manet, the Prime Minister of Cambodia, voiced his endorsement for advancing economic cooperation and encouraged Japan to increase investments, particularly in small and medium enterprises within Cambodia. The Cambodian Premier also urged the Japanese side to explore the feasibility of establishing a Cambodia-Japan Industrial Park. Additionally, he sought assistance from Japan in developing a comprehensive master plan for logistics, focusing on transforming the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port into a key regional gateway.
Addressing matters of security and national defense, Prime Minister Hun Manet welcomed the proposal for closer cooperation. He expressed support for practical initiatives, including meetings between army working groups from both countries, a visit by the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force to Cambodia in 2024, the organization of joint naval exercises as per Japan’s request, and collaboration on mine clearance.
The discussions underscored the shared commitment to strengthening the bonds between Cambodia and Japan across diverse sectors, fostering economic development, and enhancing security cooperation.
