On the eventful day of 8 August 2024, the Singapore Embassy in Phnom Penh commemorated its 59th National Day, hosting a grand reception that drew over 300 notable guests, including government dignitaries, leading business figures, and high-ranking officials from various sectors. Minister of Mines and Energy Keo Rottanak graced the occasion as the Guest of Honour, accentuating the evening’s prominence.
Ambassador Teo Lay Cheng took the stage to deliver a heartfelt speech, celebrating Singapore’s resilience and unity throughout its 59-year journey. She highlighted the solid foundation of collective spirit, which not only propelled the nation through adversities but also ensured its prosperity. A significant part of her address was dedicated to acknowledging the robust and enduring relationship between Singapore and Cambodia, which has been cemented over the years through mutual investments and partnerships. Notably, she mentioned the significant strides taken following Prime Minister Hun Manet’s visit to Singapore in June 2024, which included important agreements in digital governance and the financial sector, alongside groundbreaking opportunities in cross-border electricity trade and carbon credits initiatives.
Ambassador Teo further elaborated on the vital role of exchange programs in strengthening bilateral relations, stating the impressive number of 18,000 Cambodian officials who benefited from the Singapore Cooperation Programme since 1992. Special mention was made of the first Cambodian SR Nathan Fellow, Minister of Labour and Vocational Training Heng Sour, highlighting the depth of educational and professional exchanges between the two nations.
Echoing the sentiments of shared growth and mutual admiration, Minister Keo Rottanak lauded Singapore’s remarkable evolution into a pivotal center for innovation and diversity. He reminisced about the historical encounters that shaped the robust relationship between the two nations, dating back to 1962 with the visit of the Late King Father Norodom Sihanouk to Singapore and further solidified through succeeding high-level exchanges.
Minister Rottanak stressed the burgeoning economic cooperation covering renewable energy and carbon trading, signifying a united front in ASEAN’s energy transition ambitions. He expressed enthusiasm for the Laos-Cambodia-Singapore electricity trade project, positioning it as a cornerstone for a sustainable and integrated ASEAN Power Grid.
Moreover, ministerial appreciation was conveyed for Singapore’s continual capacity-building efforts, notably the recent digital government collaboration. The frequent bilateral exchanges were also mirrored in the increasing travel ease, with direct flights peaking at 28 per week and Singaporean tourist numbers marking a noticeable rise.
As the event drew to a close, both Minister Rottanak and Ambassador Teo reiterated their commitment to further fortify Singapore-Cambodia relations, eagerly anticipating the upcoming 60th anniversary of their diplomatic ties, promising a future of mutual progress and cooperation.
