Best Beaches in Cambodia
White-sand beaches and clear waters along Cambodia’s southern coastline and islands.

Cambodia is often recognised for its ancient temples and cultural heritage, but its coastline along the Gulf of Thailand has steadily gained attention for its beaches. Stretching across the southwest, Cambodia’s coastal regions and islands offer a mix of white-sand shores, calm turquoise waters, and relatively uncrowded settings compared to more established Southeast Asian beach destinations.

  • When to Visit Cambodia’s Beaches

This guide highlights some of the best beaches in Cambodia, covering island escapes, mainland beaches, and protected coastal areas. The information is presented in a neutral, factual manner to help travellers plan beach visits based on accessibility, atmosphere, and natural features.

Koh Rong: Cambodia’s Most Popular Island Beaches

Koh Rong is widely regarded as home to some of Cambodia’s most visually striking beaches. Located about 25 kilometres off the coast of Sihanoukville, the island features long stretches of white sand and clear waters.

Popular beach areas on Koh Rong include:

  • Long Set Beach (4K Beach), known for its length and gentle shoreline
  • Sok San Beach, which combines village life with beachfront access

The island supports a range of accommodation options, from basic guesthouses to mid-range resorts. While development has increased in recent years, several beaches still maintain a quiet and natural atmosphere.

Koh Rong Samloem: Calm and Scenic Shores

Koh Rong Samloem lies south of Koh Rong and is often preferred by travellers seeking a quieter environment. The island is smaller and less developed, with an emphasis on low-impact tourism.

Saracen Bay is the most accessible and well-known beach on the island, featuring calm waters suitable for swimming. On the opposite side, Lazy Beach offers sunset views and a more secluded setting. Electricity and services are more limited compared to mainland beaches, contributing to the island’s relaxed pace.

Otres Beach: A Quieter Side of Sihanoukville

Otres Beach is located south of central Sihanoukville and has traditionally attracted visitors looking for a calmer alternative to city beaches. Divided into Otres 1 and Otres 2, the area offers wide sandy stretches and relatively shallow waters.

While Sihanoukville has undergone rapid urban development, Otres Beach retains a more open coastal feel. Beachfront restaurants, small hotels, and cafés line parts of the shore, making it suitable for short stays or day visits.

Kep Beach: Coastal Charm with Local Character

Kep Beach is situated in the seaside town of Kep, near the Vietnamese border. Unlike island beaches, Kep Beach has a compact layout and is closely integrated with the town’s daily life.

The beach is popular with local families, particularly in the evenings and on weekends. Calm waters and nearby seafood markets contribute to its appeal. While the sand is darker than that found on island beaches, Kep’s relaxed atmosphere and proximity to other attractions make it a notable coastal stop.

Ream National Park: Undeveloped and Natural Coastline

Ream National Park offers a different beach experience focused on conservation and biodiversity. Located near Sihanoukville, the park includes mangroves, estuaries, forests, and undeveloped beaches.

The coastline within the park is largely untouched, with limited facilities. Visitors typically explore the area as part of guided tours or day trips. Ream National Park appeals to those interested in nature, birdlife, and quieter coastal environments rather than traditional beach tourism.

Koh Ta Kiev: Remote Island Beaches

Koh Ta Kiev is a smaller island known for its rustic charm and limited infrastructure. Beaches here are less commercialised, with simple accommodation options and minimal nightlife.

The island’s beaches are characterised by natural surroundings, clear water, and a slower pace of life. Koh Ta Kiev is often chosen by travellers seeking a basic island experience without extensive development.

When to Visit Cambodia’s Beaches

The best time to visit beaches in Cambodia is generally between November and April, during the dry season. Sea conditions are calmer, and rainfall is minimal. From May to October, the monsoon season can bring heavier rain and rougher seas, particularly affecting island access.

Cambodia’s beaches offer a diverse range of coastal experiences, from well-known island destinations to quieter mainland shores and protected natural areas. Whether travellers are looking for scenic island beaches, relaxed seaside towns, or undeveloped coastlines, Cambodia’s shoreline continues to grow in appeal while remaining less crowded than many regional alternatives.
