Agro-ecological approaches are encouraged by agricultural specialists for small farms.

Agriculture experts have encouraged smallholder farmers to adopt and develop agro-ecological farming in order to lower production costs and reduce environmental effects.

The initiative was made by Sok Sotha, director of the Cambodian Farmers Federation Association of Agricultural Producers (CFAP Cambodia), during the two-day National General Assembly of the Agroecology Learning Alliance in South East Asia (ALiSEA).

According to Sotha, agro-ecological farming is crucial for agriculture and farmers because small farmers may find it difficult to compete with larger farms that use more advanced cultivation techniques or high-yield chemical farming.

“We are aware that organic fertilizers made locally are less expensive than imported fertilizers. Because they can decrease fertilizer imports, I believe it will be a huge success for the farmers,” he said.

The ALiSEA network in Cambodia, which presently has 60 members and includes farmers’ organizations, government agencies, and others, will undertake some crucial work to help farmers in putting the practices into effect, he said.
