Prime Minister Urges Stronger Trilateral Security Cooperation with Laos and Vietnam

PHNOM PENH — Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has encouraged the security ministries of Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam to deepen their cooperation. He noted that stronger security partnerships will directly support broader trilateral ties in trade, economy, and investment.

The Prime Minister shared these views during a high-level meeting at the Peace Palace. He received Lieutenant General Vanthong Kongmany, Laos’ Minister of Public Security, and General Lương Tam Quang, Vietnam’s Minister of Public Security, for a working discussion.

Successful Ministerial Outcomes and Historical Ties

The visiting ministers briefed Prime Minister Hun Manet on the positive outcomes of the Second Ministerial Meeting. Cambodia hosted the session, which brought together Cambodia’s Ministry of Interior alongside the public security ministries of Laos and Vietnam. During the talks, all three parties explicitly reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing their shared security frameworks.

In response, Hun Manet welcomed the success of the ministerial event. He recalled the long-standing traditional friendship binding the three neighboring nations. Furthermore, the Prime Minister highlighted major diplomatic milestones on the horizon, pointing out that 2026 marks the 70th anniversary of Cambodia-Laos diplomatic relations, while 2027 will mark the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Cambodia and Vietnam.

Cross-Border Security and Joint Crime Combat

During the meeting, the three parties exchanged strategic views on boosting trilateral security infrastructure. They agreed to prioritize several key cross-border initiatives:

  • Border Stability: The leaders are encouraging border provinces to maintain close collaboration. This effort aims to preserve daily security and transform shared borders into zones of peace, friendship, and development.
  • Transnational Crime: The ministries will strengthen joint operational efforts to combat cross-border criminal networks.
  • Specialized Enforcement: The joint strategy places a sharp focus on stopping human trafficking, drug trafficking, and rising cyber-enabled fraud.

Before concluding the session, Prime Minister Hun Manet called for greater people-to-people exchanges among the three nations. Specifically, he emphasized the importance of building closer ties and stronger friendships among the youth of Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam to ensure long-term regional stability.
