According to a senior official, the poverty rate in Cambodia has dropped from about 40% in 2009 to 17.8% in 2020.

According to Theng Pagnathun, director general of planning at the Ministry of Planning, “during the last ten years, the poverty rate decreased by 1.6 percentage points each year, considerably driven by increased employment, especially wage, and earnings.”

He stated that the slow decline was in line with the government’s commitment to lower the poverty rate by at least 1% per year.

The country’s peace and economic growth, notably the socio-economic recovery after the pandemic, according to Prime Minister Hun Sen, are the main reasons why Cambodia will undoubtedly achieve its goal of becoming a high-middle-income country by 2030.

The Cambodian people have made enormous and proud changes as a result of peace and a stable government, particularly in the economic and social sectors.

The government has stated that it has been promoting the implementation of the policy in a number of ways, including educating stakeholders about the government’s vision, strategy, national policy plan, and sustainable development goals.
