Cambodia is entering the final stretch of preparations to host the 20th Summit of La Francophonie, which will bring heads of state and government from the French-speaking world to Phnom Penh on 15 and 16 November 2026, Agence Kampuchea Presse (AKP) reported on 25 October. It is the first time the Kingdom has hosted the summit, which will be held together with the 48th Session of the Ministerial Conference of La Francophonie under the theme of reinvesting in peace for shared prosperity and lasting stability.
Key points
- The 20th Summit of La Francophonie takes place in Phnom Penh on 15–16 November 2026, the first held in Cambodia.
- The summit's theme is reinvesting in peace for shared prosperity and lasting stability.
- A public Francophonie Village opens from 13 to 17 November in the park in front of Wat Botum.
- FrancoTech and the Sixth Francophone Entrepreneurs Forum both run from 14 to 16 November.
- The restored West Mebon temple in Siem Reap province is due to be inaugurated during the summit period.
According to AKP, His Majesty Preah Bat Samdech Preah Boromneath Norodom Sihamoni, King of Cambodia, is expected to preside over the official opening on 15 November. H.E. Emmanuel Macron, President of France, is also expected to attend.
More than a meeting of leaders
The summit week is designed to reach well beyond the conference hall. A Francophonie Village will open to the public from 13 to 17 November in the park in front of Wat Botum (Botum Watey Pagoda) in central Phnom Penh, under a theme that links the famous Khmer smile with the spirit of the French-speaking community. Running alongside it, from 14 to 16 November, are FrancoTech, a digital and technology showcase built around the idea of one francophone community sharing one digital future, and the Sixth Francophone Entrepreneurs Forum, which aims to connect businesses from French-speaking countries with partners in Cambodia and the wider ASEAN region.
Heritage will also be part of the programme. During the summit period, His Majesty the King is due to inaugurate the West Mebon temple in Siem Reap province, with H.E. Emmanuel Macron expected to co-preside. Built in the 11th century under King Udayadityavarman II, the island temple in the West Baray has been the focus of a Cambodian–French restoration since 2012, scheduled for completion this month.
The gathering was originally planned for Siem Reap, but in February organisers confirmed the move to Phnom Penh, citing the capital's concentration of hotels, its modernised airport and easier logistics during the November rains, as reported by CambodgeMag. Planning at the time anticipated between 5,000 and 7,000 delegates.
Why it matters for Cambodia
Cambodia's ties with the French language run deep. AKP notes that His Majesty the late King Norodom Sihanouk was one of the founding figures of the Francophonie movement, that around 1,400 words of French origin are still used in everyday Khmer, and that some 463,000 people in Cambodia, about 3% of the population, speak French. Worldwide, around 396 million people use the language, according to the International Organisation of La Francophonie's 2026 figures cited by the agency.
For Cambodia, hosting the summit is a chance to showcase its capital, its culture and its commitment to multilateral cooperation to a large international audience, while the business and technology events open new doors for Cambodian entrepreneurs. For residents and visitors, the Francophonie Village offers an easy way to share in the occasion.
