Hun Manet to Attend 43rd ASEAN Summit: Cambodia’s Commitment to Regional Cooperation

The 43rd ASEAN Summit and related summits taking place in Jakarta, Indonesia, from September 4 to 7, 2023, mark a significant milestone for the region. Among the noteworthy participants in the event is Prime Minister Hun Manet of Cambodia, who is stepping onto the international stage in his new role as Cambodia’s leader.

Hun Manet’s participation in the summit affirms Cambodia’s commitment to the ASEAN community, of which it is a founding member. Hun Manet will engage with other ASEAN leaders and international partners, discuss issues of common interest and concern, showcase his vision and leadership, and strengthen Cambodia’s relations and cooperation with other countries.

The summit is taking place at a crucial time when several challenges are facing the region, including the COVID-19 pandemic, geostrategic competition, and political turmoil in Myanmar. Hun Manet’s participation demonstrates his resolve to work with other ASEAN leaders and dialogue partners to promote peace, stability, and prosperity in the region. The meetings will also provide him with an opportunity to present his country’s interests and concerns on regional issues.

Cambodia’s active support for ASEAN-led initiatives, such as the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific and the ASEAN Comprehensive Recovery Framework, shows that the country is a constructive and engaged partner in regional affairs. Hun Manet’s participation builds on that legacy, demonstrating Cambodia’s commitment to the ASEAN community’s common goals and objectives.

The 43rd ASEAN Summit and related summits offer a chance for Cambodia and Hun Manet to assert their positions in the region. It also provides an opportunity for Cambodia to build new relationships with other countries and engage in meaningful dialogue on regional challenges. As we look to the future, we must recognise Cambodia’s vital role as an ASEAN member and potential leader in advancing the region’s economic, political, and social development.
