Cambodia aspires to be the second largest textile exporter to Canada.

Given Cambodia’s efforts to increase exports to Canada, it will be fascinating to see if the country can surpass Bangladesh and Vietnam in terms of garment exports to Canada.

Cambodia ranked fourth in Canada’s garment imports in 2021, trailing only Bangladesh and Vietnam by a little margin.

According to Fibre2Fashion’s market analysis tool, TexPro, Canada imported $9.599 billion in apparel last year. Cambodia contributed apparel worth $1.047 billion, accounting for 10.91% of the total.

In terms of apparel supply to Canada, the country remained fourth, while China, Bangladesh, and Vietnam were first, second, and third, respectively. Bangladesh supplied 13.38 percent (worth $1.284 billion) and Vietnam supplied 12.49 percent ($1.199 billion).

The Cambodian Chamber of Commerce (CCC) opened a representative office in Toronto, Canada, to promote garment exports. Important discussions are scheduled when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau attends the ASEAN Summit in Cambodia next month.

In 2021, Canada was Cambodia’s third largest destination for garment exports, accounting for 9.44 percent of total shipment of $11.102 billion.

Bilateral trade between Cambodia and Canada has increased significantly, as shown by Cambodia’s exports to Canada under a tariff-free and quota-free agreement valued at $954.82 million in 2022.

Other areas of cooperation between Canada and Cambodia include the Asean-Canada Free Trade Agreement and the development of auxiliary projects such as human resource development and technical development.
