A crossing between Cambodia’s Kandal province and Vietnam’s An Giang province has been upgraded to an international land border gate, opening a faster route for trade and tourism between Phnom Penh and the Mekong Delta. The two provinces jointly inaugurated the Khanh Binh–Chrey Thom international border gates on 3 October 2026.

Key points

  • The Khanh Binh–Chrey Thom crossing was inaugurated as an international land border gate on 3 October 2026.
  • It links Kandal province in Cambodia with An Giang province in Vietnam, about 75 km from Phnom Penh.
  • The aim is to raise trade through the gates to about US$1.2 billion by 2030.
  • It opens new tourism routes between Phnom Penh and the Mekong Delta.

The closest gateway to Phnom Penh

Chrey Thom, on the Cambodian side, lies about 75 kilometres from Phnom Penh, making it the An Giang crossing closest to the Cambodian capital. The upgrade on the Vietnamese side follows a government resolution of 7 August 2026.

The ceremony was co-hosted by Kandal provincial authorities, led by H.E. Kuoch Chamroeun, Governor of Kandal province, and by H.E. Ho Van Mung, Chairman of the An Giang Provincial People’s Committee.

US$1.2 billion trade goal

An Giang aims to lift the value of trade passing through the gates to about US$1.2 billion by 2030. The crossing is expected to serve as a transit hub for goods between the Mekong Delta, Cambodia and the wider ASEAN region, and to attract investment, logistics and service jobs to the border area.

New routes for tourists

The upgraded gates also make it easier to link tours between Phnom Penh and the river towns of the Mekong Delta. The opening follows that of the Muen Chey–Tan Nam international border gate in December 2025, part of a wider effort by the two neighbours to improve connections.
