Cambodia and Laos military chiefs discuss joint defense cooperation in Phnom Penh during the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties.

In Phnom Penh on 16 February 2026, the commanders-in-chief of the Cambodian and Lao armed forces held a high-level meeting to reaffirm ongoing military cooperation as both nations mark the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations. General Vong Pisen, Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF), received Saichay Kommasith, Deputy Minister of National Defense and Chief of the General Staff of the Lao People’s Army, during the bilateral talks.

The discussions focused on strengthening defense ties and expanding collaboration within established bilateral security frameworks. Both sides expressed satisfaction with the positive momentum of relations and military cooperation over the decades, acknowledging increased exchanges at all levels and regular joint meetings of defense committees.

According to officials, cooperation has encompassed border security, information sharing, training programs, and joint efforts to combat terrorism and transnational crime. The leaders also highlighted existing scholarship exchanges aimed at fostering professional development within both armed forces.

The meeting additionally emphasized enhanced mechanisms for practical cooperation, including the effective implementation of bilateral protocols, improved communication channels, and continued collaboration to resolve emerging security challenges. Representatives from both countries noted that structured military cooperation contributes to peace and stability not only domestically but across the broader region.

Cambodia and Laos share a border exceeding 550 kilometers. As of 2026, approximately 86 percent of the border demarcation has been agreed upon, according to defense sources. Joint border committees from both nations continue engagements to settle remaining sections, reflecting a longstanding commitment to peaceful and cooperative relations.

The reaffirmation of defense cooperation in the 70th anniversary year reinforces the strategic military partnership between Cambodia and Laos. Officials from both sides have reiterated their commitment to ongoing collaboration, particularly in areas of training, disaster response, and coordinated border security activities.
