Cambodia Plans to Nominate Seven Khmer Cultural Properties for World Heritage Listing

Cambodian Prime Minister, Hun Manet, has confirmed that the Royal Government is preparing to nominate seven additional Cambodian cultural properties for inclusion in the World Heritage List. Speaking at the inauguration of Preah Botum Stupa at Mony Ratanaream Pagoda in Pursat province, the Prime Minister revealed the proposed sites for nomination.

The seven cultural properties in consideration for nomination include the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, Banteay Chhmar Temple, Phnom Da, Phnom Preah Reach Troap, Preah Khan Kampong Svay, Beng Mealea, and Phnom Kulen. By seeking recognition on the World Heritage List, Cambodia aims to preserve and promote these significant cultural sites.

In addition to the proposed properties, the Royal Government also plans to nominate more elements of Cambodian culture for global recognition. These include the Cambodian Scarf (Krama), the Khmer traditional wedding ceremony, and Sangkran, a traditional Cambodian New Year celebration.

Prime Minister Hun Manet emphasized that while the concern for protection is valid, Cambodia will not tolerate any attempts to appropriate Cambodian culture without proper safeguards. This statement highlights the government’s commitment to preserving and respecting the cultural heritage of the country.

Currently, Cambodia has ten cultural properties inscribed on the World Heritage List. Among them, four are tangible heritage sites, including the famous Angkor Archaeological Park, Preah Vihear Temple, the Temple Zone of Sambor Prei Kuk, and the Koh Ker archaeological site. The remaining six properties are intangible heritage, encompassing the Royal Ballet of Cambodia, Sbek Thom (shadow puppetry), Lkhon Khol Way Svay Andet (the masked dance), the tug-of-war game, Chapei Dang Veng (a traditional musical instrument), and Kun Lbokator (a martial arts form).

By adding these seven new properties to the list, Cambodia aims to preserve not only its physical heritage but also its intangible traditions and customs. This recognition would further enhance the global understanding and appreciation of Cambodian culture.

In conclusion, the Royal Government of Cambodia is actively working on nominating seven additional cultural properties for inclusion in the World Heritage List. Alongside tangible sites of historical significance, efforts are being made to promote intangible aspects of Khmer culture. Such recognition would not only safeguard these treasures but also increase awareness and appreciation of Cambodia’s rich cultural heritage on the global stage.
