Cambodian Government Sets Quota for Recruitment of Persons with Disabilities in Government Institutions

The Royal Government of Cambodia has taken a significant step towards promoting the rights and employment opportunities for persons with disabilities. The government has announced a quota of up to 2% for the recruitment of people with disabilities to work in government ministries and institutions in accordance with the law on protection and promotion of persons with disabilities.

This announcement was made by Prime Minister Hun Sen during the opening of the 5th Asia-Pacific Conference on Persons with Disabilities 2023 held at Sokha Hotel, Phnom Penh on March 15. The conference aimed to discuss and explore solutions to the challenges faced by persons with disabilities and create awareness about their rights and opportunities.

The Cambodian government’s move towards promoting employment opportunities for people with disabilities is commendable. It will provide a much-needed impetus to the economic and social development of the country. The private sector has also been encouraged to participate and employ persons with disabilities to contribute to the wider socio-economic development of the country.

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the Incheon strategy aim to give real rights to persons with disabilities. The Cambodian government’s decision to set a quota for their employment is a step towards realizing these goals.

The employment of persons with disabilities in the public sector will not only provide them with a steady source of income but also promote inclusivity and diversity in the workforce. It will also encourage other employers to follow suit and create more employment opportunities for people with disabilities.
