Cambodian Government’s $100 Million Budget Allocation to Revitalize Agriculture Sector Receives Praise

In a commendable move to support the agriculture sector, the Royal Government of Cambodia has allocated a substantial budget of $100 million. This funding aims to improve the irrigation system, enhance crop productivity, and offer agricultural training to farmers across the country. Prime Minister Hun Manet highlighted the importance of this initiative, emphasizing the need to boost productivity and address potential threats to the agricultural industry.

Investing in Agricultural Productivity

Prime Minister Hun Manet recognized the significance of agricultural products, particularly vegetables, fruits, and paddy and milled rice. With the allocation of the $100 million budget, the Cambodian government is determined to bolster crop productivity and counter any potential downfall in agricultural goods’ prices. By providing support to farmers, the government’s focus is on increasing productivity and preventing any adverse impacts on their livelihoods.

Creating New Markets

The Prime Minister also emphasized the government’s efforts to establish new markets in both European countries and among ASEAN member nations. This strategic approach aims to enhance Cambodia’s agricultural sector by promoting its products globally. By diversifying its markets, Cambodia seeks to reduce dependency on a single market and expand opportunities to export agricultural goods, further ensuring the growth and sustainability of the sector.

Partnerships and Skill Development

Recognizing the importance of collaboration and skill development, the government expects relevant ministries and authorities to work in tandem with agricultural officers. Deploying these officers to agricultural-potential communes, especially in rural areas, will provide farmers with valuable guidance and professional training. Prime Minister Hun Manet emphasized the selection of skilled agricultural officials to ensure effective knowledge transfer and coherent support for farmers.

Praise from Industry Leaders

Leaders from Cambodia’s agricultural industry have enthusiastically welcomed the government’s budget allocation. Lun Yeng, Secretary General of the Cambodia Rice Federation (CRF), emphasized that the agriculture sector plays a pivotal role in the country’s development. He praised the government’s concern and attention towards farmers’ livelihoods, believing that this financial support reflects the commitment to enhance productivity, meet international quality standards, and fulfill purchase demands in the global market.

Uon Silot, President of the Cashew Nut Association of Cambodia (CAC), appreciated the government’s decision to allocate funds for the agriculture sector. Silot stressed that most financial institutions generally neglect rural farmers when it comes to loan approvals, favoring small and medium enterprises (SMEs) instead. He believed that this move by the government would send a strong message to financial institutions regarding the importance of the agriculture sector and the need to support farmers across the country.

The Cambodian government’s decision to allocate a significant budget of $100 million to revitalize and enhance the agriculture sector has been greeted with praise and optimism. This commendable initiative showcases their commitment to supporting farmers, improving productivity, and expanding Cambodia’s market presence abroad. The collaborative efforts of relevant ministries, agricultural officers, and skilled officials will undoubtedly play a vital role in empowering farmers and promoting sustainable growth in the agricultural industry.
