Cambodia’s #ONESTEPNOPLASTIC, small contribution to reduce the world’s plastic pollution crisis

#ONESTEPNOPLASTIC Phnom Penh is scheduled on 26th November 2022 . An exciting clean-up campaign with solidarity lunch with a performance by Phare, The Cambodian Circus – ល្ខោនសៀកកម្ពុជាហ្វារ and a music performance by Tos Yerng.

Plastic pollution has emerged as one of the most pressing environmental issues, as the world’s ability to deal with it is being swamped by the rapidly increasing production of disposable plastic products.

Plastics derived from fossil fuels have been around for a little more than a century. After WWII, the production and development of thousands of new plastic products accelerated, completely transforming modern life.

Plastics revolutionised medicine with life-saving devices, enabled space travel, lightened cars and jets (saving fuel and pollution), and saved lives with helmets, incubators, and clean drinking water equipment.

The conveniences that plastics provide, however, have resulted in a throw-away culture that reveals the material’s dark side: single-use plastics now account for 40% of all plastic produced each year. Many of these products, such as plastic bags and food wrappers, have a short lifespan but can persist in the environment for hundreds of years.

In the last 15 years, half of all plastics have been produced.

From 2.3 million tons in 1950 to 370 million tons in 2022, production increased at an exponential rate. By 2050, production is expected to more than double.

Every year, approximately 8 million tons of plastic waste from coastal nations enter the oceans. That equates to placing five garbage bags full of trash on every foot of coastline around the world.

Jacques Guichandut, Managing Director of All Dreams Cambodia, addressing participants at SiemReap event.

Plastics frequently contain additives that make them stronger, more flexible, and longer-lasting. However, many of these additives have the potential to extend the life of products if they end up in the environment, with some estimates ranging from 400 years to break down.

In July 2022, All Dreams Cambodia and Tos Yerng launched the #ONESTEPNOPLASTIC campaign to combat plastic pollution in Cambodia and promote the kingdom as a sustainable and appealing tourism destination.
