French Investment Company Eyes Expanding Cambodia’s Railway Infrastructure

A French investment firm has shown keen interest in spearheading new railway projects that could potentially link Cambodia’s capital, Phnom Penh, with the airport and other strategic areas. Mr. Philippe Delleur, the Senior Vice President of Alstom, a prominent player in rail transportation, high-speed train manufacturing, metro, monorail, and tram systems, expressed the company’s commitment to investing in urban planning, transportation infrastructure, and railway development in Cambodia during a meeting with Prime Minister Hun Manet.

The meeting took place on January 15, 2024, in Paris, France, where Mr. Delleur introduced Alstom’s extensive portfolio and global business activities. Alstom has a proven track record of investing in rail transport and the production of high-speed trains, monorails, and trams. With an impressive presence in many countries worldwide, including several ASEAN nations like Thailand, the Philippines, and Vietnam, Alstom brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the table.

Mr. Delleur emphasized Alstom’s capacity and willingness to invest in Cambodia’s railway transport sector, drawing on the company’s successful track record in Asia. He highlighted the potential for collaboration in urban planning and transport connectivity, specifically mentioning the possibility of constructing a railway connecting Phnom Penh with the airport and other significant locations.

Prime Minister Hun Manet, in response, reiterated the Cambodian government’s strong commitment to bolstering ties with friendly nations, with a particular focus on enhancing trade and investment cooperation. He highlighted Cambodia’s investor-friendly policies and conducive business environment, including the recently enacted investment law, which offers a favorable framework and incentives for foreign direct investment.

Encouraging French companies and investors to explore opportunities in Cambodia, Prime Minister Hun Manet extended support to Alstom’s interest in expanding Cambodia’s railway infrastructure. He urged Alstom to engage with the Ministry of Public Works and Transport of Cambodia to explore the feasibility of conducting feasibility studies in key economic zones of the Kingdom, such as Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and Sihanoukville.

Alstom’s expression of interest in Cambodia’s railway development marks a significant step towards enhancing the country’s transportation infrastructure. With the prospect of modern rail connectivity, Cambodia could witness improved transportation efficiency, connectivity between urban centers, and a boost to its economic potential. This partnership holds the promise of a brighter and more interconnected future for Cambodia’s transportation landscape.
