Gabriel Tan: Using communication as a force for good in Cambodia

Every day, a post from Gabriel appears when we open LinkedIn. It may be meeting individuals for philanthropic work or friendly talk, sharing some motivational stories or articles. It is well known that he loves to learn and to share what he has learned.

He is one of the leading communicators in Cambodia. The way he is leading the communications department of Prince Holding Group and managing the challenging task of information flow between a wide range of stakeholders is admirable. For Prince Holding Group and its affiliated companies, he is in charge of communication strategies, media and investor relations, and issues management.

We met for the first time at the Phare Circus event in Phnom Penh after connecting on Linked In. Recently, he invited me to lunch with him. It was a fruitful meeting.

In his opinion, effective communications is not merely  about sharing one’s view. It’s also as important to be a good listener. As Winston Churchill put it eloquently, “Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.”

Gabriel Tan carefully listened to my summary of The Better Cambodia during our meeting. People feel more valued when they are sure that their views are being heard.

Over the course of his career, Gabriel Tan has led his teams to several awards, including the recent 2022 People’s Choice Stevie® Awards for Favorite Companies, where among conglomerates winners across 67 markets, Prince Holding Group stood out, within a poll of 53,000 corporate representatives, for its business performance, philanthropic work and anti-pandemic response last year in Cambodia, as well as two victories at the SABRE Awards Asia Pacific (Capital Markets Communications in 2020 and Automotive Marketing in 2018).

Prince Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Prince Holding Group, is headed by Gabriel. He works with the foundation team to launch initiatives that are more comprehensive and closely linked with Cambodia’s national development objectives, including those related to healthcare assistance, community participation, and education and youth development.

Since 2015, the Prince Foundation has organized over 250 charitable events that have benefited more than 500,000 Cambodians and donated more than US$15 million in total.

Over the course of his last 18 years in the communications industry, he has worked in agency, in-house, and entrepreneurial roles while living and working in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Singapore, Phnom Penh, and Johor Bahru.

Prior to joining Prince Holding Group, Gabriel Tan oversaw the Greater China Financial Communications practice at Hill+Knowlton Strategies, which included a team of around 30 people in Hong Kong.

Cambodia’s philanthropic and communication sector is incomplete without mentioning people like Gabriel Tan.
