Project to modernize Sihanoukville port receives $383.22 million from Japan.

Japan has provided a $383.22 million loan to Cambodia’s Sihanoukville Port for its refurbishment and expansion.

The Exchange of Notes and accompanying agreements on the loan for the Sihanoukville Port New Container Terminal Expansion Project were signed by Hayashi Yoshimasa, the Foreign Minister of Japan, and Prak Sokhonn, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

On the sidelines of the 55th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, the signing ceremony was presided over by Prime Minister Hun Sen.

On his Facebook page, Mr. Hun Sen said that the concession loan would be utilized to deepen, modernize, and expand the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port.

Mr. Hun Sen praised the Japanese government for extending credit for the port project as well as providing Cambodia the Covid-19 vaccine.

Japan is one of Cambodia’s main strategic and development partners. Building a bridge towards peace and prosperity and connecting the Kingdom of Cambodia to the region and the rest of the world has received the unwavering support of Japan.

Since the late 1980s, Japan has made a considerable contribution to the peace-making, peace-keeping, and peace-building processes in Cambodia.

Japan has invested time and money in the restoration and development of Cambodia since the 1993 general election, including infrastructural improvement, institutional development, and human resource development. Japan has gained the Cambodian people’s trust through these sincere efforts.

This is the most important element in bilateral relationships. The collaboration has been guided by the ideals of mutual respect, shared understanding, mutual trust, and mutual interest.
