Reviving Traditions: Cambodia’s Sankranta Festival Makes a “Triumphant Comeback”

The highly anticipated Sankranta Festival, marking the Khmer New Year, made a grand reappearance at the renowned Angkor Archeological Park this past Friday. After a four-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, tens of thousands of enthusiastic participants eagerly flocked to the iconic site to celebrate the three-day Lunar New Year event.

Addressing the massive crowd, Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen credited the successful relaunch of the Sankranta Festival to the government’s effective management of the pandemic. He emphasized the importance of the festival in inspiring Cambodians, particularly the youth, to appreciate and preserve the nation’s rich cultural heritage, traditions, and customs. The Prime Minister also noted the role of the festival in maintaining national identity and promoting national pride.

From Friday to Sunday, attendees will enjoy a diverse array of activities reflecting the vibrant life of the Cambodian people. The festival features cultural shows, traditional games, dancing, singing, martial arts, trade exhibitions, food showcases, and modern concerts, among other engaging performances.

Samdech Hun Sen expressed confidence that the Sankranta Festival would provide a much-needed boost to the pandemic-stricken tourism industry. This year’s Angkor Sankranti event, themed “Dreams and Hopes,” shone a spotlight on the legacy of the Khmer ancestors, showcasing their civilization, culture, traditions, and contributions in a captivating display.

As night fell on Friday, Siem Reap town buzzed with excitement. The streets filled with people celebrating the Khmer New Year, a positive indication for the local tourism sector. Hotels in Siem Reap experienced a surge in bookings, and the joyous atmosphere continued throughout the night. Locals and visitors alike reveled in music, dancing, and the unique tradition of spraying water mixed with talcum powder as they exchanged New Year greetings.

The Sankranta festival’s successful return is a testament to Cambodia’s resilience and a beacon of hope for the nation’s tourism and cultural preservation efforts. As the country seeks to rebuild in the post-pandemic era, events like these will continue to play a crucial role in uniting communities and showcasing the exceptional beauty of Cambodian heritage.
