Strengthening Cambodia-European Union Ties to Foster Mutual Growth

In recent developments, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has underscored the importance of further strengthening ties between Cambodia and the European Union (EU). During a courtesy call by outgoing EU Ambassador to Cambodia Carmen Moreno, Prime Minister Hun Manet emphasised the need for continued support and finance for the “Multi-Annual Indicative Programme 2021-2027- Phase 2.” This programme aims to enhance bilateral cooperation across various sectors and aligns with both Cambodia’s national development priorities and key EU policy objectives.

Acknowledging Cambodia’s Success:
Ambassador Carmen Moreno applauded Cambodia’s remarkable achievements in effectively managing the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the country’s successful leadership during its chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) last year. The EU remains committed to fostering closer cooperation with Cambodia, particularly under the exemplary leadership of Prime Minister Hun Manet and the Royal Government of the 7th Legislature of the National Assembly.

Renewed Support for Cambodia’s Development:
During the meeting, Prime Minister Hun Manet emphasised the importance of the EU as Cambodia’s largest export market. He appealed for the EU to continue considering support and financing for the “Multi-annual Indicative Programme 2021-2027-Phase 2,” which seeks to facilitate Cambodia’s trade and exports to the EU market. This renewed support from the EU is crucial for Cambodia’s sustained economic growth and development.

EU Aid for Cambodia’s Economic Development:
The Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC) reported that the EU plans to provide an additional $510 million in aid to support Cambodia’s economic development from 2021 to 2027. This aid will be allocated towards key areas such as agriculture, education, and governance, aiming to reinforce Cambodia’s potential for growth and prosperity.

The positive and constructive engagement between Cambodia and the European Union is a significant step forward in strengthening their bilateral relationship. The commitment from both sides, as highlighted by Prime Minister Hun Manet and Ambassador Carmen Moreno, underscores a shared desire to fortify cooperation across various sectors in Cambodia. With the EU’s renewed support and financing, Cambodia can continue to enhance its trade and exports, achieve sustainable economic development, and foster a prosperous future for its people.
