PHNOM PENH — Cambodia’s transition toward sustainable mobility is gaining rapid momentum, with official figures revealing that electric vehicle (EV) registrations have surged to 17,972 units as of September 2026.
According to a recent report from the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, the milestone figure includes 6,178 electric motorcycles and three-wheelers, signaling a sweeping shift in consumer preference toward cleaner, more energy-efficient transportation across the Kingdom.
Driving Factors Behind Cambodia’s EV Boom
The exponential growth in EV adoption aligns with global sustainability trends and reflects rising consumer awareness regarding household financial savings and environmental preservation.
Ministry of Public Works and Transport spokesman Phan Rim emphasized that switching to electric mobility helps families significantly reduce household transportation expenses while mitigating urban air pollution.
“The increasing number of electric vehicles registered in Cambodia reflects growing public interest in cleaner and more energy-efficient transportation,” Rim noted, adding that the ministry is committed to establishing robust technical safety standards and expanding infrastructure.
Market preferences in Cambodia currently lean toward prominent global brands, with BYD (China), Toyota (Japan), and Tesla (United States) dominating the nation’s top three spots for EV popularity.
Expanding Charging Infrastructure and Policy Support
To support this surging demand, the Royal Government of Cambodia has rolled out the National Policy on the Development of Electric Vehicles (2024–2030), which aims to encourage private investment, streamline regulations, and build out nationwide charging networks.
Official data from the Ministry of Mines and Energy highlights that over 400 EV charging locations are now operational nationwide, making long-distance travel and daily commuting increasingly convenient for EV owners.
With the government targeting a broader vision for green urban transport under its long-term national frameworks, the rapid expansion of nearly 18,000 registered units marks a pivotal milestone toward achieving a cleaner, lower-carbon transport ecosystem in Cambodia.
