In a heartwarming gesture of appreciation, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has voiced his thankfulness to the citizens of Cambodia, both within the nation and abroad, for their unwavering support of the Funan Techo Canal project. His sentiments were shared during a meeting with employees at the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port on Wednesday, May 1.
The Prime Minister highlighted the critical role the Funan-Techo Canal project plays in paving the way for Cambodia’s tourist sector’s growth. He elaborated on the potential benefits, describing a future where cruise lines entering Cambodia can offer tourists a seamless journey from Phnom Penh to the historic Siem Reap to marvel at Angkor Wat. Despite the existing provision for high-speed ferries between Phnom Penh and Angkor Wat, the absence of a connecting waterway to Sihanoukville constitutes a crucial missing link. The establishment of such a link would significantly amplify Cambodia’s attractiveness to tourists, encouraging them to prolong their visits.
Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet further explained that the value of tourism is not solely in the numbers but significantly influenced by the duration of the visitors’ stay within the country. Extending tourists’ time in Cambodia is indicative of a richer, more fulfilling experience, which is much sought after. This perspective underscores the project’s importance not merely as an infrastructure development but as a strategic endeavor to enhance the quality and appeal of Cambodia as a prime tourism destination.
The Prime Minister’s gratitude extends beyond mere words, reflecting a deep appreciation for the collective effort and solidarity shown by Cambodians at home and abroad. This support is seen as a driving force behind the Funan Techo Canal project, envisaging a brighter future for Cambodia’s tourism industry and, by extension, its economic prosperity. Through initiatives like the Funan Techo Canal, Cambodia is poised to elevate its position on the global tourism map, inviting visitors from around the world to experience its unique heritage and breathtaking landscapes for longer periods.
