Prime Minister Hun Manet Celebrates UNESCO Recognition of the Cambodian Krama as Intangible Cultural Heritage

The Cambodian krama, an iconic symbol of the nation’s culture and identity, has been inscribed as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. This recognition was announced during the 19th session of the Intergovernmental Committee of the 2003 UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage held in Asunción, Paraguay.

In a heartfelt congratulatory message, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet expressed immense pride in this remarkable achievement, stating, “This is a monumental accomplishment for our nation and its people. It underscores our unwavering commitment to preserving the krama as a cherished heritage for future generations.”

Samdech Thipadei also conveyed his profound gratitude to Queen Mother Norodom Monineath Sihanouk and King Norodom Sihamoni for their steadfast support in safeguarding Cambodia’s cultural heritage. He praised the collaborative efforts of the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, the krama weaving community, and various national and international organizations, whose dedication and hard work culminated in this significant milestone.

Recognizing the cultural and historical importance of the krama, Prime Minister Hun Manet emphasized the need for widespread media coverage of this achievement. He highlighted the krama’s deep-rooted significance in Cambodian society as a symbol of resilience, identity, and artistic tradition.

This inscription marks a new chapter in the global appreciation of Cambodia’s intangible cultural heritage, celebrating the krama as a timeless emblem of the nation’s spirit and creativity.
