Phnom Penh — The Ministry of Tourism has confirmed that this year’s Spring Equinox event at Angkor Wat, scheduled from March 21 to 23, is expected to attract large numbers of visitors eager to observe the rare solar alignment with the iconic temple’s central towers. The phenomenon occurs when the rising sun aligns precisely with the axis of the ancient temple, creating a striking visual spectacle that draws both tourists and locals alike.
Angkor Wat, located in the UNESCO-listed Angkor Archaeological Park in Siem Reap province, is one of Cambodia’s most visited cultural sites. The equinox event is a biannual astronomical occurrence, visible during the spring and autumn equinoxes, when sunrise aligns with the temple’s central spire as seen from the western entrance causeway.
Tourism officials have said preparations are underway to facilitate attendance at the event, with crowds anticipated at dawn near the western entrance where the alignment is most vivid. Visitors typically gather in the early morning hours, between approximately 5:00 a.m. and 6:30 a.m., to witness the sun’s path intersecting with the temple’s ancient architecture.
The equinox sunrise alignment highlights both the architectural sophistication and astronomical knowledge of the Khmer builders who constructed Angkor Wat in the 12th century. Scholars and heritage experts have noted that the temple’s orientation reflects broader cultural and cosmological significance, linking natural cycles with spiritual symbolism.
Local tourism stakeholders say the event contributes to continued interest in Cambodia’s cultural heritage and supports regional tourism activity, as visitors often combine equinox viewing with broader exploration of Angkor’s historic temples. In past years, significant visitor numbers — including both domestic and international travellers — have attended the equinox sunrise, creating lively scenes of early-morning gatherings at the monument.
Authorities encourage attendees to plan for early arrival and observe designated viewing areas to ensure safety and comfort while preserving the site’s integrity. Transportation, park access points, and visitor support services are being coordinated with local tourism agencies to accommodate expected crowds.
The Spring Equinox event remains one of the most unique cultural and natural spectacles linked to Cambodia’s iconic heritage, drawing attention to Angkor Wat as both an archaeological treasure and a site of astronomical wonder.
