Battambang Mango Exports to Thailand Surge

Farmers in Battambang province have seen a significant increase in the daily export of fresh mangoes to Thailand, reaching volumes of 150–200 tonnes. Heng Sith, a representative from the Battambang Provincial Department of Agriculture, confirmed these figures, noting that they come directly from officials at the export port who monitor these transactions closely.

The Kamrieng International Border Checkpoint serves as the crucial conduit for these mango exports. At this juncture, every batch of mangoes undergoes a thorough inspection to ensure it meets the exacting requirements of Thai buyers. These criteria encompass a range of quality control checks, including stringent hygiene standards, the absence of any resin stains on the mangoes, and the use of appropriate packaging to ensure the fruit’s safety and quality during transit.

Despite these careful measures, not all mango batches make the cut, leading to rejections that can impose financial strains on the farmers. This issue often stems from a gap in the farmers’ understanding of the market’s needs and expectations.

Battambang province boasts an impressive 16,079 hectares dedicated to mango cultivation, with 14,340 hectares currently in production. These orchards yield an average of approximately 21.7 tonnes of mangoes per hectare, underscoring the significant role mango farming plays in the region’s agricultural landscape.

Sith stressed the critical nature of market knowledge for farmers, particularly in the realm of crop management and sales strategies. He pointed out that mangoes, due to their longer growth cycle, tend to maintain their market appeal over time, suggesting a relatively stable demand compared to other crops.

A notable development in the sector is the construction of a large mango processing facility by a Chinese firm in the Rattanak Mondul district. This plant is anticipated to have a profound impact on the local mango industry by offering a reliable outlet for the farmers’ output, thereby enhancing the overall stability and profitability of mango farming in Battambang. This initiative marks a significant step forward in the region’s agricultural development, promising a brighter future for local mango producers.
