Cambodia Experiences Significant Growth in Agricultural Exports

by TBC

Cambodia witnessed a remarkable surge in the export of key agricultural products during the first eleven months of 2024, showcasing the sector’s expanding contribution to the national economy.

The primary agricultural products exported during this period included rice, bananas, mangoes, cassava, cashew nuts, corn, pepper, and tobacco. According to an official report from the Ministry of Commerce, the country generated USD 1,271 million from paddy rice exports and USD 438 million from milled rice exports. These figures represent a year-on-year increase of 16.42 percent and 3.97 percent, respectively.

Cassava exports earned Cambodia USD 622 million, reflecting a growth of 13.42 percent, while rubber exports brought in USD 523 million, a 15.81 percent increase compared to the previous year. The export of cashew nuts reached USD 502 million, marking an impressive year-on-year growth of 31 percent. Similarly, fresh mango exports generated USD 138 million, up by 24 percent.

However, the export of bananas faced a decline, decreasing by 11.2 percent to USD 138 million.

China, Vietnam, and Thailand remain the major importers of Cambodia’s agricultural products, continuing to play a crucial role in the market.

Agriculture is a cornerstone of Cambodia’s economy, being one of the four key pillars supporting national development. To further strengthen this vital sector, the Royal Government of Cambodia has introduced a strategic policy aimed at transitioning the agricultural sector from household-based farming to a commercial model. This policy also focuses on enhancing farmers’ income through value-added agricultural products.

As part of this priority initiative, the government has deployed 250 agricultural officials across the country, with plans to expand this number to over 1,300 by 2025. These officials will offer technical assistance to farmers, facilitate the formation of agricultural cooperatives, connect production chains, and guide farmers on reducing production costs.

The continued growth in Cambodia’s agricultural exports reflects the success of these strategic efforts and the sector’s potential to drive broader economic development in the coming years.
