Prime Minister Hun Manet of Cambodia has made a significant announcement inviting martial arts enthusiasts across the globe to participate in the country’s annual martial arts competitions slated to begin in October 2024. During the opening of the 2nd Asian Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Championship in Phnom Penh on July 11, Hun Manet expressed his gratitude towards the Olympic Movement and the Asian MMA Association for their trust in Cambodia to organize such a prestigious event. He demonstrated a strong commitment to developing sports within the nation, aligning with Cambodia’s broader goals of peace, political stability, and economic growth.
These Khmer Martial Arts competitions aim to provide a stage for practitioners of traditional Khmer martial arts to display their talents. Hun Manet emphasized that these competitions would be inclusive, inviting the participation of not just locals but also foreign enthusiasts, civil servants, and armed forces members. The idea is to share Cambodia’s rich martial arts heritage with both the local and international community, further promoting research into these ancient practices.
Previously, competitions focused on individual martial arts like Khmer boxing and Kun Lbokator were held separately. However, from October 2024, Cambodia plans to unite these under the umbrella of traditional Khmer mixed martial arts competitions. This move showcases the diversity of martial arts practices in Cambodia and provides an ample opportunity for fighters specializing in various forms like jiu jitsu, judo, wrestling, boxing, kickboxing, karate, and taekwondo.
Additionally, Hun Manet praised the role of sports in not only bolstering Cambodia’s international reputation but also in promoting tourism, culture, society, and the economy. He underscored that events like the MMA championship are more than just athletic competitions; they are a conduit for enhancing national pride and fostering friendships across borders.
The 2nd Asian MMA Championship, held at the National Olympic Stadium, represented a significant milestone for Cambodia, showcasing the nation’s capability to host major international sports events successfully. The event saw participation from a total of 204 sports delegates, including athletes, referees, trainers, and coaches, highlighting the broad interest in mixed martial arts across the region.
As Cambodia prepares to host its annual traditional Khmer martial arts competition from October 2024, it reaffirms the nation’s dedication to preserving and sharing its unique cultural heritage with the world, while striving towards excellence in sports development on both a national and international level.
