Cambodian Silk and Krama Take Center Stage at Paris Fashion Show, Showcasing Khmer Heritage and Diplomacy

by TBC

Cambodian silk and the iconic krama, both emblems of the nation’s cultural heritage, were celebrated on the global stage during an international fashion show in Paris on Saturday. Blending traditional Khmer designs with modern Western styles, the event showcased Cambodia’s cultural richness as part of an economic and cultural diplomacy initiative. It was organized by the Cambodian Embassy in France in collaboration with the Padouma Association.

A Platform for Khmer Heritage

Cambodia’s Ambassador to France, Luy David, emphasized the event’s significance, highlighting the diverse international attendance. Guests included diplomats from ASEAN and Francophonie nations, representatives from Paris District 7, French businesses like BRED Bank, and notable figures in media and fashion.

Prominent personalities, such as Michel Drucker, a distinguished French television host, and Rodrigo Basilicati Cardin, the nephew of legendary designer Pierre Cardin and head of the Pierre Cardin company, were among the attendees.

A Fusion of Khmer and Western Artistry

The fashion show featured stunning creations designed by Yleng Kem, a Khmer designer with over four decades of experience working with Pierre Cardin, and Nizam Piarroux, a French designer with 30 years of expertise. Their collaboration brought to life garments that symbolized a harmonious blend of Khmer heritage and Western aesthetics. Designs prominently incorporated Cambodia’s national flower, the romduol, symbolizing the elegance and pride of Khmer craftsmanship.

Ambassador David noted that the intricately woven silk garments represented unity and solidarity among Cambodians. He also highlighted the cultural significance of the krama and silk, which were officially inscribed as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in December 2024. These textiles reflect Cambodia’s deep-rooted traditions, artistic excellence, and the enduring spirit of its people.

Strengthening Cultural Diplomacy

The ambassador praised the Cambodian diaspora, particularly in France, for their efforts to promote Khmer culture on the global stage. He emphasized that preserving cultural heritage while advancing development is central to international recognition and effective cultural diplomacy.

The fashion show also aligned with Cambodia’s broader strategy to deepen its diplomatic ties beyond traditional partners. Ambassador David stated that events like these not only celebrate Khmer culture but also foster goodwill and cooperation internationally.

Cambodia’s Expanding Global Engagement

Political analyst Seun Sam from the Royal Academy of Cambodia noted the strategic importance of broadening Cambodia’s international relations with countries like France, Japan, Australia, the US, and South Korea. This diversification strengthens Cambodia’s global presence and supports its development goals.

The event echoed the priorities outlined during Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet’s official visit to France in 2024, which focused on bolstering bilateral ties in education, healthcare, culture, and economic investment. The visit resulted in several agreements, including Cambodia’s integration into the Francophone economic partnership framework.

By showcasing Khmer artistry and cultural heritage, the fashion show in Paris highlighted Cambodia’s commitment to fostering cultural diplomacy and strengthening its position on the international stage.
