Erex Co., Ltd., a leading Japanese investment firm, has unveiled plans to construct a 50MW biomass power plant in Kampong Speu province, marking a significant step toward boosting Cambodia’s sustainable energy capacity. Scheduled to begin construction in June 2025, the plant is set to enhance the region’s energy supply, offering affordable electricity for Kampong Speu and surrounding areas.
This announcement was made during a strategic meeting between His Excellency Tuy Ri, Cambodian Ambassador to Japan, and His Excellency IMAMURA Masahiro, the former President of the Cambodia-Japan Parliamentary Friendship Alliance and Advisor to the Cambodian Prime Minister. The discussions centered on strengthening bilateral cooperation in energy development between Cambodia and Japan.
In addition to the biomass power plant, Erex Co., Ltd. also plans to develop a 40MW solar power plant in Pursat province, expected to be operational by 2026, pending approval from the Royal Government of Cambodia in 2024. This dual commitment to renewable energy underscores Erex’s dedication to supporting Cambodia’s green energy transition and promoting energy security.
According to Mr. Hitoshi Honna, the owner of Erex, the biomass power plant will take approximately two years to complete, with operations slated to begin by 2027. The project will utilize agricultural waste, including rice husks, straw, and bark, to generate power, aligning with Cambodia’s growing focus on renewable energy solutions that reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
Ambassador Tuy Ri expressed strong support for Erex’s initiatives and highlighted the importance of these projects for Cambodia’s energy sustainability. He committed to facilitating connections between Erex and experts from the Ministry of Mines and Energy in May to ensure a smooth project preparation phase.
This collaboration between Erex and the Cambodian government signals a promising future for Cambodia’s energy sector, with increased foreign investment and sustainable energy initiatives contributing to the nation’s long-term economic development. These efforts also strengthen Cambodia’s position as a key player in the ASEAN energy landscape, fostering international partnerships for green growth.
