In a move to enhance the financial experience for both tourists and locals in Cambodia, Prime Minister Hun Manet has called on the National Bank of Cambodia and private banking institutions to facilitate the free exchange of slightly damaged US dollar notes. Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony of the Samdech Pin Sem Museum in Siem Reap province, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of eliminating any inconvenience caused by the non-acceptance of lightly worn currency. He highlighted that while counterfeit and extensively damaged notes are understandably rejected, there should be leniency towards slightly torn ones to prevent complications in transactions and dissatisfaction among consumers. Hun Manet has also urged the National Bank to establish clear standards for the use of such currency to make spending smoother for tourists and residents alike.
Alongside financial adjustments, Prime Minister Hun Manet invited Cambodians to mark the groundbreaking of the ambitious Funan Techo Canal project with celebrations on August 5, 2024. The initiative, symbolizing national progress and unity, aims to connect various provinces to the sea, underscoring the significance of waterway development in the country. Costing approximately USD 1.7 billion, the project reflects Cambodia’s efforts to foster development while honoring the legacy of its ancestors.
Addressing the concern of dwindling tourism in Siem Reap, Hun Manet revealed that he had secretly assigned teams to assess the situation, bypassing the provincial governor to ensure a direct understanding of the challenges faced by the sector. Following his visit to Pub Street and discussions with tourism operators, the Prime Minister proposed several initiatives to revitalize the area’s attractions, including promoting boating activities and establishing permanent recreational facilities. These efforts are expected to commence in October, highlighting the government’s proactive approach to bolstering the tourism industry in Siem Reap and beyond.
These series of measures initiated by Prime Minister Hun Manet demonstrate a comprehensive strategy to enhance Cambodia’s financial flexibility, infrastructure development, and tourism sector, aiming for a sustained improvement in the nation’s appeal to both locals and international visitors.
