Kampot, Cambodia – April 21, 2025
Prime Minister Hun Manet is set to preside over the official inauguration of the Kampot International Tourist Port later today, signalling the launch of one of Cambodia’s most strategically important infrastructure projects aimed at boosting maritime tourism.

Situated in Chum Kriel Village, Teuk Chhou District of Kampot Province, the port occupies 4.25 hectares and was built as a generous contribution from Oknha Vinh Hour to the Royal Government of Cambodia. It has been developed with modern facilities to support international cruise and passenger vessels, making it a key gateway for maritime tourism in southern Cambodia.

A Comprehensive Infrastructure for Tourism and Connectivity

The Kampot International Tourist Port features a wide range of facilities, including a 2.4-kilometre concrete access road, reliable electricity and clean water systems, wastewater treatment, security fences, parking lots, landscaped gardens, ponds, waste management units, public restrooms, and technical and administrative buildings. A dedicated dock, fire control system, and other technical components ensure the port is equipped for efficient operation and passenger comfort.

The port’s waterway has been engineered to support vessels carrying up to 300 passengers. The current route covers a length of 6.75 kilometres, with a water depth of 3 metres and a 62-metre width divided into two navigation lanes. The government’s long-term plan includes expanding the channel to a depth exceeding 3 metres, a width of 160 to 340 metres, and a length of 15 kilometres—enabling even larger vessels and greater tourism potential.

Years of Planning and Development

Construction of the port began on August 8, 2018, and was completed by June 30, 2022. The project was executed by S.B.P.H. Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd., under the supervision of S.B.K. Research & Development Company. The initiative was financed through a US$10 million loan from the Asian Development Bank, supplemented by Cambodian government contributions to cover taxes, staffing, and operational support.

On June 28, 2024, the Ministry of Public Works and Transport signed a 20-year Operation and Maintenance Agreement with EZ Builders Co., Ltd. Under this agreement, EZ Builders is responsible for operating, maintaining, and upgrading the port infrastructure, with the right to collect revenue and benefit from tax incentives during the initial six years of operations.

Preparing for Full Operations

Ahead of today’s official inauguration, the Ministry and EZ Builders collaborated to ensure the port’s full readiness. Tasks included finalising infrastructure, installing operational systems, preparing legal documentation for international port recognition, and forming a management committee to oversee daily operations.

EZ Builders has also dredged the port’s navigation channel and turning areas to allow safe access for passenger ships. Since December 12, 2024, the port has been under a three-month trial operation period, which has already welcomed over 5,000 passengers, with services provided in partnership with local operator Virak Buntham.

Unlocking Regional Economic Growth

The Kampot International Tourist Port is expected to serve as a critical link to nearby tourist hotspots, including Kep, Preah Sihanouk, and Koh Kong provinces, as well as Cambodia’s scenic islands. The port will significantly enhance regional sea transport and support the government’s goal of transforming Cambodia into a competitive regional tourism hub.

Increased tourist traffic is projected to generate substantial socio-economic benefits, such as job creation, greater income for local residents, and business growth in sectors like hospitality, retail, and transportation. Additionally, it will stimulate the development of new entertainment and tourism infrastructure in Kampot and neighbouring provinces.

A Catalyst for Maritime Tourism

The inauguration ceremony, scheduled for today, is more than just a ribbon-cutting event—it symbolises the Royal Government’s commitment to long-term development through infrastructure and tourism. With continued support from the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, and private sector engagement through EZ Builders, the port is expected to open new avenues for regional and international collaboration.

By connecting Cambodia to broader maritime routes and attracting cruise tourism, the Kampot International Tourist Port is set to play a pivotal role in strengthening Cambodia’s position as a dynamic destination for global travellers.
