Three Decades of Constitutional Integrity: Cambodia Celebrates with New Monument

by TBC

In a symbol of national honor and legal adherence, Cambodia has recently marked a historical moment with the inauguration of the Constitutional Monument in the presence of King Norodom Sihamoni. This event coincides with the 30th anniversary of the Constitution of the Kingdom of Cambodia, a period that has seen the nation achieve significant milestones in peace, unity, and legal stability.

Addressing the gathering on September 24, King Norodom Sihamoni emphasized the importance of the Constitution, which represents a harmonious blend of modern values and ancient heritage. It underscores a vision for a prosperous future and serves as the guiding framework for the country’s governance. The King urged the Cambodian people to display steadfast commitment to preserving and protecting the Constitution, stressing its role as the supreme law of the nation.

The notable progress Cambodia has experienced since the Constitution’s implementation is attributed to the steadfast leadership of President of the Senate Samdech Techo Hun Sen and the win-win policy. The King remarked on this policy’s instrumental role in safeguarding national sovereignty, reinforcing social harmony, and preserving the Angkor civilization. This, in turn, has paved the way for an era of peace, described metaphorically as an ‘Island of Peace,’ rooted in democratic principles, human rights, and the rule of law, promoting overall national development.

The efforts to sustain and advance this constitutional legacy continue under the direction of Prime Minister Hun Manet, who leads Cambodia with a vision of sophistication and progress. The enduring stability of the 1993 Constitution over three decades is indeed a milestone in Cambodian history. The newly unveiled Constitutional Monument is not only a physical embodiment of this historical period but a testament to the dedication of those patriots who laid down and enforced this supreme law.

King Norodom Sihamoni took the opportunity to pay homage to the diligent individuals responsible for drafting the Constitution in 1993 and remembered those who have since passed away. His sincere appreciation also went to the guiding forces behind the completion of the monument, including support from Samdech Techo Hun Sen, and the insightful and creative contributions from the President of the Constitutional Council, Im Chhun Lim. Their collective efforts, along with the involvement of architects, intellectuals, artists, and craftsmen, have been pivotal in establishing this sacred edifice.

The Constitution Monument, authorized by Samdech Techo Hun Sen and completed with a budget of over USD 2 million, took 14 months to construct and stands impressively at a height of 23.4 meters. It is built on an area of 2380 square meters, faces east, and embodies a symbolic weight. It is situated on a site recognized as a national heritage landmark, ensuring that the pride of the present bridges with the storied past of the Khmer civilization.

As it now stands, the Constitution Monument is more than a mere structure; it is a permanent reminder of a collective commitment to the ethical and legal standards that have been set forth by the Kingdom’s Constitution. It encourages current and future generations to honor those commitments and to participate actively in the continued peace and prosperity of Cambodia.
