The Techo International Airport, located in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, is set to be one of the most significant architectural milestones of 2025, as highlighted by Cable News Network (CNN). As part of the country’s ambitious vision to strengthen its tourism industry and establish itself as a regional aviation hub, this state-of-the-art airport will replace the current Phnom Penh International Airport, dramatically increasing its capacity.
The new Techo International Airport will be capable of handling up to 13 million passengers annually in its first phase, with plans for expansion that could eventually accommodate 30 million. This project aims to bolster Cambodia’s tourism infrastructure and further integrate the nation into the global aviation network. The terminal building itself, located approximately 19 kilometers (12 miles) south of Phnom Penh’s city center, will stand as one of Southeast Asia’s largest and most modern, designed with sustainability in mind.
One of the most striking features of the Techo International Airport is its green design. The architects at Foster + Partners have incorporated an on-site solar farm that will generate energy for the airport, making it one of the most eco-friendly airport projects globally. The terminal’s design is inspired by traditional Cambodian architecture, with a series of structural timber “trees” supporting the roof, and real trees also integrated into the terminal’s vast central void. The gridded steel shell of the roof filters daylight, illuminating the terminal’s interior, which is adorned with lush tropical greenery. Passengers will move through the space via two airfoil-shaped wings leading to the gates.
The airport is a collaboration between the Cambodian government and private investors, managed by Cambodia Airport Investment Co., Ltd. The project is a public-private partnership, with a 90 percent stake held by the Overseas Cambodia Investment Corporation (OCIC) and the remaining 10 percent owned by the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation.
Techo International Airport is a large-scale, Class 4F airport built on more than 2,600 hectares of land. The project is being developed in three phases: Phase 1, from 2020 to 2030, will focus on the construction of the first terminal, capable of handling 13 million passengers and 175,000 tonnes of cargo annually. Phases 2 and 3, from 2030 to 2050 and beyond, will expand the airport’s capacity further to meet future demand.
In addition to Techo International Airport, CNN also highlighted ten other groundbreaking infrastructure projects scheduled to shape the world in 2025. These include the New Sydney Fish Market in Sydney, Australia; the Grand Ring in Osaka, Japan; the Life and Mind Building in Oxford, UK; the Canadian School in Cholula, Mexico; the South Station redevelopment in Boston, USA; the Goethe-Institut in Dakar, Senegal; Urban Glen in Hangzhou, China; the Riyadh Metro in Saudi Arabia; Skypark Business Centre in Luxembourg; and the Danjiang Bridge in Taipei, Taiwan.
As Cambodia’s Techo International Airport nears completion, it promises to be a key landmark in both the country’s development and the region’s broader infrastructure growth, contributing to the future of aviation and sustainable design.
