Prak Sokhonn, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, has expressed deep appreciation for the European Union’s (EU) significant contribution to Cambodia’s development efforts.
The Cambodian top diplomat conveyed his gratitude during a meeting with EU Ambassador to Cambodia, Igor Driesmans, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation on January 2, as stated in a press release received by AKP on Friday evening.
During their discussion, Prak Sokhonn extended cordial congratulations to the EU leaders on the successful resumption of their mandate in December. He commended the EU’s continued support for Cambodia’s socio-economic progress, highlighting the importance of technical assistance and capacity-building programmes. These initiatives aim to address key challenges such as poverty reduction, healthcare, education, and climate change, while fostering a more inclusive and prosperous Cambodian society.
The Deputy Prime Minister praised Ambassador Driesmans for his efforts in enhancing bilateral relations between Cambodia and the EU through active collaboration with various Cambodian institutions. He expressed Cambodia’s sincere gratitude for the EU’s alignment of the Joint European Strategy for Development Cooperation with Cambodia’s Pentagonal Strategy-Phase I. This national strategy focuses on achieving sustainable and inclusive growth with the ambition of transforming Cambodia into a high-income nation by 2050.
On the political front, both sides reaffirmed the importance of maintaining high-level engagements between Cambodian and EU leaders. These consistent diplomatic exchanges have strengthened partnerships based on mutual benefit, understanding, and respect.
Addressing democracy and the rule of law, Prak Sokhonn reiterated Cambodia’s strong commitment to upholding the rule of law as enshrined in the Cambodian Constitution and existing legislation. He emphasized the government’s intention to further enhance democratic space for the benefit of the Cambodian people.
The meeting also touched on regional and international issues, reflecting both parties’ commitment to continued collaboration on global challenges.
