PHNOM PENH, Cambodia — La French Tech Phnom Penh hosted its first highly anticipated Tech Talk event on Tuesday, June 16, 2026. The evening successfully gathered over 150 eager participants at The Last Stage, Aquation Theater in Koh Pich. Specifically, the audience included local entrepreneurs, tech founders, startup investors, and students. Ultimately, this massive turnout drove a focused discussion on how artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping the startup landscape.
The landmark event was held under a clear theme: “Apps for Emerging Markets — In the age of AI, how do we build from Cambodia?” Consequently, attendees explored the massive opportunities emerging within Cambodia’s young tech landscape. Meanwhile, they also focused heavily on the practical, boots-on-the-ground realities of creating digital products within a developing economy.
Furthermore, several special guests attended the evening talks. These distinguished leaders included H.E. Chea Ratha, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Commerce, and H.E. Kim Korn Long, Chairman of the Federation of Cambodian Startups. Thanks to their presence, the Board of La French Tech Phnom Penh led the event smoothly.

Tech Founders Share Practical Lessons from the Ground
The event kicked off with quick product showcases from forward-thinking founders building across multiple sectors:
- THE MAP: Co-founders Hélène Quintin and Sébastien Lacan unveiled their travel-tech platform. For instance, the app helps users discover destinations through curated, location-based travel recommendations.
- BAMNANG: Co-founder and CEO Seng Rothsethamony introduced a digital solution combining education and property technology. Therefore, the platform provides easy access to learning tools and real-estate services. Additionally, global heavyweights like Plug and Play, the Harvard Innovation Labs pre-accelerator, and the Singapore Management University accelerator back the venture.
- UMAMI: Co-founder and CEO Laurine Chateau shared insights into her food-tech platform. In short, the app connects food lovers with dining experiences while supporting local restaurant businesses.
During his showcase, BAMNANG CEO Seng Rothsethamony shared an ambitious long-term goal:
“We hope that by 2030, BAMNANG can become one of the first Cambodian unicorns. This aligns perfectly with the vision of our Minister of Post and Telecommunications, Dr. Chea Vandeth. He wants to foster successful Cambodian unicorns. Therefore, we are waiting to support and inspire more startups to grow right here from the Kingdom of Cambodia.”
Experts Debate AI, Local Talent, and Regional Startup Scaling
A highly interactive panel discussion followed the showcases. Specifically, the panel featured Vantharith Oum (Plug and Play Tech Center), Sokha Phanith (Techo Startup Center), Thierry Ngon (RedBridge), AmrithVatey C. Kim (NewWave), and Kevin Sabbe (SKAI Technology). Sivhuang Lay, Managing Director of DICHI Academy, moderated the talk. Together, the panelists broke down Cambodia’s tech progress over the past five years. Furthermore, they focused on how AI can help startups move faster despite operating in a smaller domestic market.

However, Sokha Phanith, Department Director of the Techo Startup Center, reminded founders that local nuance matters more than just adopting the latest tech tools:
“Replicating solutions that work abroad does not always guarantee success in Cambodia. To build products that truly work here, founders need to understand the local context. They must study user behavior, market realities, and the specific needs of Cambodian communities. Technology and AI can accelerate innovation, but success ultimately comes from solving real problems that people are willing to adopt and pay for.”
As a result, the panel actively debated deep challenges facing local builders. These challenges include accessing venture capital and developing specialized technical talent. In addition, founders face hurdles with consumer adoption and managing cybersecurity risks. Furthermore, the ecosystem needs stronger links between local accelerators, public institutions, and broader regional markets. Consequently, the panel left the audience with a critical question: Should Cambodian startups scale locally first, or should they design their business models to go regional from day one?
Shifting From Early Promise to Practical Execution
The overarching takeaway from the night was clear. Cambodia’s tech ecosystem is rapidly transitioning from early potential to hard execution. In particular, a young, mobile-first population drives this change. Meanwhile, expanding digital infrastructure and growing public-private support networks also accelerate growth. Because of these factors, local builders are moving past basic tech copies. Instead, they are evaluating how AI-driven solutions built inside Cambodia can effectively capture regional consumer bases.
Consequently, the event successfully created a vibrant networking hub for builders across FinTech, HealthTech, blockchain, software development, offshore outsourcing, and logistics. For example, representatives from prominent international and local institutions attended. These included UNICEF, the Federation of Cambodian Startups, PillTech, Obor Capital, Khmer Enterprise, and Innolabs.
The Road to the 2026 Francophonie Summit
This successful Tech Talk marks the beginning of a broader strategic series of tech initiatives. Organizers are planning these events ahead of the upcoming 2026 Francophonie Summit in Cambodia. Therefore, these efforts aim to elevate Cambodia’s overall visibility within the broader Southeast Asian innovation landscape.
In conclusion, the board of La French Tech Phnom Penh expressed gratitude to all speakers, ecosystem partners, and corporate sponsors. Their contributions made the inaugural launch a massive success. This event succeeded through direct support from OCIC, SBI APAC, and Aquation Theater. Additionally, the wider La French Tech Phnom Penh network provided crucial backing, including the Canadia Impact Fund, TechFlow, UMAMI, and Pravinya.
