Cambodia has marked a significant achievement in its energy sector, with electricity consumption rising by 15.56% in 2024 compared to the same period last year. Speaking at the Ministry of Mines and Energy’s annual meeting on Thursday (Nov. 21), Prime Minister Hun Manet highlighted the kingdom’s advancements in power generation and distribution.
The premier shared that 86.67% of Cambodia’s electricity is now sourced from domestic energy production, with only 13.3% being imported from neighbouring countries. This remarkable shift reflects Cambodia’s growing self-reliance in energy and underscores the success of strategic investments in domestic energy infrastructure.
Expanding Access to Electricity Nationwide
Cambodia’s efforts to expand electricity coverage have reached an impressive milestone. By the end of 2024, 99.15% of villages across the country will have access to the national grid, demonstrating the government’s commitment to ensuring energy availability for all citizens. The number of connected user locations has also surged to 3.86 million, representing an approximate 4% increase from 2023.
Prime Minister Hun Manet further emphasised that 95.25% of households nationwide—3.6 million homes—are now connected to the electricity grid. This achievement highlights the tangible benefits of a robust energy policy, ensuring that more Cambodians can access reliable electricity for their daily needs.
A Collective Achievement
The premier expressed his gratitude to the Ministry of Mines and Energy, the Electricity Authority of Cambodia, private development partners, and stakeholders for their unwavering efforts in transforming the energy landscape. Their contributions have propelled Cambodia towards a future of sustainable energy access and economic growth.
“Electricity is a fundamental driver of progress,” said Prime Minister Hun Manet. “The achievements in the energy sector are not just numbers; they represent a brighter and more empowered future for the Cambodian people.”
Powering Economic and Social Growth
With electricity now reaching nearly all corners of the country, Cambodia is well-positioned to accelerate economic development, attract more investment, and improve the quality of life for its citizens. From urban centers to rural villages, the expanded power network is enabling businesses, schools, and healthcare facilities to operate more efficiently, fostering greater inclusivity in the country’s development journey.
This milestone is a testament to Cambodia’s vision for a brighter and more connected future, ensuring that energy continues to power not just homes but also the dreams and aspirations of its people.
