H.E. HEM Vanndy, Minister of Industry, Science, Technology & Innovation, met with a delegation from Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Japan Environmental Management Association for Industry (JEMAI) on March 11, 2025, to explore ways to leverage Japan’s expertise in industrial management to support Cambodia’s sustainable industrial development.
During the meeting, Mr. HAMASAKA Takashi, Director of the Environmental Management Promotion Office at METI, highlighted Japan’s rapid industrialization in the 1950s and 1960s, which initially caused significant pollution challenges. He explained how the Japanese government partnered with the private sector to develop pollution control technologies and implement effective regulatory measures, promoting sustainable industrial growth.
Mr. HAMASAKA noted that since 1971, Japan has established dedicated pollution management units in factories, which have played a crucial role in addressing environmental concerns. He emphasized the importance of helping Cambodian enterprises integrate into global supply chains by adopting international sustainability standards.
Minister Vanndy welcomed Japan’s insights, recognizing Cambodia’s ongoing economic growth and urbanization trends, which present both opportunities and environmental challenges. He reaffirmed the Cambodian government’s commitment to attracting investment while strengthening environmental, social, and governance (ESG) safeguards.
Minister Vanndy stressed the need for a balanced approach, advocating for practical regulations tailored to Cambodia’s specific context. He highlighted the importance of educating and supporting businesses rather than imposing punitive measures.
Mr. HAMASAKA assured that JEMAI would support Cambodia’s pollution management efforts, fostering an industrial sector aligned with sustainable development goals.
