Phnom Penh, Cambodia — Cambodia’s Senate President and former Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen has publicly acknowledged the deepening diplomatic and cooperative relationship between Cambodia and Brunei Darussalam as both nations celebrate Brunei’s National Day, according to a report from Khmer Times.
In his official message, Hun Sen extended warm congratulations to His Majesty Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah and the people of Brunei, underscoring longstanding bilateral relations rooted in mutual respect and shared regional priorities. The comments were made in the context of official recognition of Brunei’s National Day, which marks the country’s independence and national identity.
Hun Sen noted the ongoing collaboration between the legislative bodies and governments of both countries, emphasising the importance of continued political dialogue, economic cooperation and cultural exchange. He also highlighted the role both countries play in advancing peace, stability and development within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) framework.
The bilateral relationship between Cambodia and Brunei continues to expand across multiple sectors, including trade, education and defence cooperation. Established in 1992, diplomatic ties have been maintained through regular exchanges and high-level visits, reflecting broader efforts to increase economic engagement and strategic cooperation between the two ASEAN member states.
In his remarks, Hun Sen reaffirmed Cambodia’s commitment to strengthening ties with Brunei, noting that enhanced cooperation can benefit both nations through expanded economic opportunities and mutual support on regional issues. Officials from both sides have expressed interest in further developing frameworks for collaboration that support shared goals in sustainable development and regional connectivity.
Observers say that such diplomatic affirmations contribute to ASEAN’s overarching mission to promote peace, stability and shared prosperity across Southeast Asia, especially as member countries look to deepen engagement in response to evolving geopolitical and economic landscapes.
The recognition of Brunei’s National Day by Cambodian leadership reaffirms the importance of bilateral partnerships in fostering regional harmony and collective progress within ASEAN.
