Phnom Penh, June 9, 2025 — The Ministry of National Defence of Cambodia announced today that military commanders from Cambodia and Thailand have reached a mutual agreement to adjust troop positions in select border areas, a move designed to reduce tensions and prevent confrontation between the two countries.
The decision was made during a recent bilateral meeting between senior military officials from both sides. According to the ministry’s statement, the aim is to de-escalate pressure in sensitive zones where soldiers from the two nations had been stationed in close proximity in recent weeks.
In a related development, Senate President Hun Sen addressed the matter on his official Facebook page, affirming the importance of resolving such issues through understanding and peaceful negotiation. “Adjusting troop deployments through mutual understanding is necessary to prevent serious clashes,” he wrote.
Hun Sen emphasized that the people of both Cambodia and Thailand desire peace, not conflict, and highlighted the ongoing communication at all levels—from government representatives to military officers in the field—that led to the latest agreement. He called on the public to remain confident in the government’s peaceful approach to resolving the matter.
“I ask the public to trust that the government is working to solve this through peaceful means, which is the only way to avoid violence and maintain good relations with our neighbouring country,” Hun Sen stated.
While the Defence Ministry did not disclose the specific locations involved or the number of troops affected, it noted that the adjustments are intended to reduce the risk of unintentional clashes and improve operational coordination between the two armed forces.
This development marks a positive step in ongoing efforts by both countries to manage long-standing border sensitivities through dialogue and cooperation. Cambodian officials have consistently reiterated their commitment to international law and peaceful diplomacy in handling territorial matters with neighboring states.
