Cambodian taekwondo athletes made headlines at the Hope International Open Taekwondo Championship 2026, held from January 9 to 11 at the Buyong Hall of the National Olympic Stadium in Phnom Penh. Showcasing exceptional skill and determination, the Cambodian WT (World Taekwondo) team earned a staggering 698 medals, including 228 gold, 195 silver, and 275 bronze, the highest tally among all participating nations.
The championship drew 560 athletes from six countries, including Cambodia, Myanmar, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, and South Korea. Cambodia’s outstanding performance reflects the country’s growing focus on nurturing sports talent and the success of national programs in martial arts development.
At the closing ceremony, South Korean coach of the Cambodian national team, Mr. Choi Yongsok, praised the athletes’ efforts and highlighted the importance of such events in building a strong foundation for future international competitions. The championship served as a crucial platform for athletes aged 5 to 18 to gain experience, improve skills, and prepare for major events like the Asian Youth Games.
Organized by the Cambodian Taekwondo Federation in collaboration with the Taekwondo Academy and Kukkiwon Cambodia, the event also emphasized youth engagement and long-term sports development. This aligns with broader national initiatives to promote investment and development in Cambodia, including fostering healthy lifestyles and supporting young talent across various disciplines.
Cambodia’s record-breaking medal haul not only strengthens its position in the martial arts community but also highlights the country’s dedication to sustainable growth and international recognition in sports and beyond. This achievement sets a high benchmark for future competitions and inspires the next generation of Cambodian athletes to aim for global excellence.
